Dear Editor,
Mugabe is being fooled by the army which says it will go back to war if he loses. He must be reminded that most of the members of the army now belong to the young generation, a generation that has suffered under his regime. These young men and women might pretend to support Mugabe, but come voting day, they will vote otherwise. To go to war with the threats that have been made is just a dream; how many war vets are there to be afraid of? It is high time that Zimbabweans stand their ground and prove that they are ready to fight this system that wants to continue ruling with an iron fist. Zimbabwe is not meant for Mugabe only. Why should a nation be cowed into submitting to Mugabe’s dictates? Zimbabweans have suffered and might as well die while voting him out. Let him threaten while they win the election, and if he refuses to go the blood is still running and warm in their veins.
The politics of threatening the electorate, the politics of violence, and the politics of intimidating voters is the politics of losers. Voters should come out in their millions and prove to Mugabe and his cronies that he commands no support any more, that they cannot be threatened into submission any longer. This is the time to vote for change, for a new Zimbabwe.
Yours faithfully,
Clyde B. Chakupeta
