A circuit breaker that was damaged during construction work at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday morning resulted in the power to the medical institution’s buildings being disconnected for some 30 minutes to effect repairs.
Everything is now back to normal and the hospital’s administration has put measures in place to prevent a reoccurrence.
A GPHC press release issued late yesterday afternoon said the institution was required to “temporarily disconnect the power supply to some buildings in the compound, to effect repairs to the damaged main circuit breaker and main supply service connection”.
According to the hospital, the circuit breaker was damaged as a result of work at the construction site for the new in-patient wards and it resulted in the sparking of wires and burning of cables at the site.
It added that the surgical block, located in the northern part of the compound, which houses Wards A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 and other surrounding buildings were without power for about thirty minutes. The institution made it clear that the incident did not affect its operation and internal network while stressing that at no time was there a fire in the surgical block or any other building in the compound. As a precautionary measure, the Guyana Power and Light and the Guyana Fire Service were called in, the release said.
