At the Annual General Meeting of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Thursday, Captain Gerry Gouveia was elected chairman of the commission to succeed Michael Correia and Ramesh Dookhoo was elected vice-chairman to take over from Col (rtd) Carl Morgan.
At the AGM, members of the PSC elected a new council representing the fourteen sectoral organizations and twenty corporate members who elected the new executive management committee, a press release stated.
Meanwhile, Bert Sukhai was re-elected honorary treasurer and Bal Parsaud, outgoing executive director, was elected honorary secretary.
Gouveia, in brief remarks to the newly-elected council, expressed his admiration for the “wonderful job” performed by Correia in further building and restructuring the commission and in leading by consensus.
Gouveia also asked the council members for their support and to trust in his good judgment at those times when the leadership of the commission must “step up to the plate” and make its voice felt on those public issues which are of concern to the nation.
The new chairman said that he considered it essential that the commission keep the channels of communication open to the government and to all of the many organizations and interests in civil society and to the people. He declared that it was important “to have our voices heard and respected.”
The release said further that Gouveia emphasized that to meet the many challenges ahead the commission must be prepared and ready “to reach up, to reach down and to step out.”
