The J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School on the basis of some brilliant teamwork and the loud vocal support of their coaching staff and students came from behind and defeated Lower Corentyne Secondary School in the final of the Berbice Cellink sponsored Inter-Secondary School Volleyball tournament at the Area ‘H’ ground.
According to a press release, Lower Corentyne won the first set 25-24 before J.C. Chandisingh won the two remaining sets 25-22, 25-23 to take home the winner’s trophy and close to $100,000 in prizes including volleyballs, t-shirts and education kits.
Lower Corentyne Secondary received two volleyballs and $30,000 in education kits for their second-placed finish in the competition which attracted eight teams.
Earlier in the semi-finals Lower Corentyne Secondary defeated New Amsterdam Secondary in straight sets 15-10, 15-12 while J.C. Chandisingh defeated Berbice High 15-14, 15-13.
Orwin Noel of Lower Corentyne Secondary was adjudged Best Spiker while Surendra Mootipersaud and Jason Seelochan of J.C. Chandisingh were named the Best Setter and Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the finals respectively. The other schools involved received two volleyballs each.
Secretary/ CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) Hilbert Foster at the presentation hailed the outstanding player of all the teams and expressed surprise at the high standard of play, especially in the finals.
He pledged the club’s involvement in promoting volleyball in Region Six and also disclosed that schools in the region would be involved in chess, basketball, table tennis and football competitions during the September term which will be organized by the club in its continuing effort to offer sports as an alternative to a life free of drugs and crime.
Foster also expressed gratitude to Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Marketing Director, Wyston Robertson, for that company’s constant support to the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club, while special mention was made of Gregory Rambarran of DTV Channel 8 who donated the winner’s trophy and assisted with technical advice.
