National player Jerezeno Bell went on a goal spree scoring a whooping 17 goals in one match to pilot reigning Diamond Mineral male hockey champions Everest Hikers to a destructive 21-1 win over Old Fort on the fourth evening of action in the Guyana Hockey Board Warm up six-a-side tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Thursday.
Bell received valuable support from Randy Hope who added three goals and Devin Munroe who chipped in with one.
Terry Shaw scored the lone goal for Old Fort. The Everest side had beaten Carib Degenerates 24-2 earlier in the tournament.
Everest Hikers female side also won their encounter against GCC Tigers 2-1 in the pool battle of the women giants.
GCC took the lead early in the game when Trisha Woodroffe converted a penalty stroke awarded in the 14th minute. Everest equalised through veteran Wendy Boodhoo before Maria Munroe sealed the issue for the Camp Road side.
The feature match of the night however, pitted the surprising GCC ‘B’ and Old Fort ‘A’ teams in a match where the veteran favourites Old Fort would be forced to chase for much of the game.
GCC opened the score through a Stuart Gonsalves tip-in three minutes into the game but Old Fort replied with a penetrating pass down the middle for an Adrian Brandt deflection.
GCC would steal the lead once again just before the half when Gonsalves managed to capitalise on a rebound to score his second goal of the match.
The enthusiastic GCC ‘B’ team surprised the Old Fort supporters by extending their lead to 3-1 nine minutes into the second half with a Rawl Davson deflection from the far post.
Both goalkeepers Tony Cole for Old Fort and Shad Fernandes for GCC produced some fine saves throughout the match to keep the scores low but a heroic effort by national striker Aderemi Simon managed to salvage the draw for Old Fort just before the final whistle. Simon would make two steals off the tiring GCC defence to draw the scores level at 4-4 just before the final buzzer.
Western Dragons defeated the Carib Degenerates 7-2 through doubles from Deon Brandford and Trason Corbin while Andel Sampson, Deon Carew and Jefferson Ray chipped in with a goal each.
Murtland ‘Chowmein’ Smith and Sheldon Corlette each scored a goal for the Degenerates.
GCC ‘A’ made light work of the young Everest Hikers ‘B’ by 7-1 margin. Kevin Spencer scored a double for GCC while Chris Xavier, Shaka Gill, Orlando Semple, Peter DeGroot and Gregory Garroway supported with one goal each.
Renrik Eversley scored the lone goal for Everest.
GCC ‘A’ leads the men’s table on 12 points – with four wins from four matches followed by Everest Hikers on 10 points from four matches and GCC B on eight points from five matches. Old Fort `A’ holds on to fourth spot on the points table with seven points from four games with Western Dragons nipping at their heels with six points from their three matches. Carib Degenerates on four points from four matches, Police on one point and Everest `B’ and Old Fort `B’ with out points round out the points table.
In the ladies competition Everest Hikers moved to the head of the table with six points with GCC Tigers on three points and GCC Spartans in the cellar without a point.
