Continental Cycle Club’s Alonzo Greaves along with Roraima’s Darren Allen and Tyrone Hamilton will depart these shores on Wednesday for the island of Anguilla where they will represent Guyana in the John T Memorial 80-mile cycle road race on Sunday.
Greaves, who narrowly missed retaining his senior national road race title yesterday, has been in great form throughout the year and must fancy his chances in the event which he will compete against Anguilla-based Guyanese Godfrey Pollydore and Dwayne Jupiter Gibbs respectively among others.
Pollydore recently won the National Sports Commission annual three stage cycle race.
Allen and Hamilton are known to offer serious challenges on the road locally with the former displaying grit and determination in winning the third and final stage of the Independence three-stage cycle road race recently and can all be strong contenders for the US$800 first prize which is up for grabs.
The second-placed finisher will receive US$700 with US$600, $500 and $400 respectively going to the third, fourth and fifth placed finishers.
Cyclists occupying sixth to tenth- place will each pocket US$150.000 whilst 11th to 20th will receive US$100.00 each.
Originally, the invitation was sent to the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) who decided on sending a four-man team, but the fourth cyclist short listed by the GCF Phillip Piggott has been unable to secure his own sponsorship and will not make the trip.
The trio’s participation has been made possible through sponsorship from Humphrey’s Bakery and Farm Products, Dyna’s Embroidery, Delmur Company Limited, Guyana Lands and Survey commission, John Fernandes Limited, Computers and Control (Guy) Limited, Rohit Lumber Yard, Shazim Khan, Ming’s Products and Services, Antarctic Repairs and Maintenance, Danny’s Auto Sales and Swiss House Cambio.
Meanwhile, Pollydore continued his fine showing in Anguilla this year when he won the pre-John T Memorial race held last Sunday from fellow Guyanese Sherwin Osborne and Jupiter- Gibbs respectively.
