Managing Director of the West Indian Sports Complex (WISC) Mohammed Feroze Khan yesterday handed over boxing equipment valued at $300,000 to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
At a simple presentation ceremony held in front of the store on Robb Street in the presence of coaches of various boxing gyms, boxers and boxing supporters, Khan said he was delighted with the work of the GABA president and saw the need to offer his assistance.
“When I saw how hard Affeeze Khan was working through the press, I decided to make the gesture in donating the equipment to assist him with taking amateur boxing forward in Guyana.”
Ever since he returned from the USA, Khan, who is also the proprietor of the store, has made several contributions to various sports disciplines including football, badminton, table tennis and cricket, not to mention the assistance he has recently rendered to the Benschop Foundation.
GABA boss Affeeze Khan said he welcomed the help from the supportive business entity.
The president also made it clear that GABA was very thankful for all the support it receives and promised that the new equipment would be utilized in assisting to promote boxing in Guyana in the 10 administrative regions.
He added that this was the kind of support that other business entities needed to make towards sport in Guyana.
Five pairs of head guards, boxing gloves, boxing shoes, mouth guards, hand-wraps and safety boxes along with a bicycle, a centre ball and two medicine balls were among the boxing gear handed over to GABA.
They were immediately distributed onsite to a few of the boxing gyms present such as Republican Gym, Bagotsville Gym, and the newly-formed Timehri Warriors and Mocha Arcadia Gyms respectively.
