The Guyana Defence Force says it strongly advises all members of the media against fuelling speculation regarding the tragedy last month at Lindo Creek through the publication of unfounded opinions by members of the general public.
According to the GDF, such an instance occurred in the “What the people say about…” column of Stabroek News on Monday, June 30, 2008.
The Army was responding in a press release to the publication of opinions expressed in the Stabroek News on Monday in the “What the people say about…” column in which members of the public were asked to share their opinions regarding the Lindo Creek murders.
The GDF asserted that “while everyone is entitled to an opinion, such publication tends to spur attitudes of distrust and have other negative spin-offs which can only redound to the disintegration of our society.”
In that light, the Army is asking instead that the public be informed that a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy is currently underway, and the Guyana government has requested forensic assistance from the USA.
At this time it is necessary for all Guyana, the GDF said, to ensure and support an environment of calm in which the investigators can swiftly and efficiently work to provide answers regarding the horrific tragedy of June 21.
And assuring that its responsibility to the nation will never be taken lightly, the GDF said it is working to ensure that the realities regarding the tragedy become clear to all concerned.
The GDF also expressed deepest sympathies to all the families, relatives and friends of the victims.
