The Barama Company Limited on Friday donated a quantity of greenheart wood valued at approximately $400,000 to the Fruta Conquerors Football Club to assist in improving the seating arrangement at the Tucville ground.
According to skipper of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club, Marlon Cole, the team was promised 60 percent of its winnings in cash and 40 percent in kind after they triumphed in the final of the 2005 President’s Cup tournament which had a first place prize of G$1M.
Cole said that the donation was made possible by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Forestry.
Corporate Affairs Senior Manager of Barama, Denise Beresford, commended Cole for his persistence and said that the determination exhibited by Cole helped her company to attract their attention and comply with a request made earlier by Cole to aid in the development of the facility.
“We get thousands of letters from all over the country but the fact Marlon [Cole] pursued the issue and kept calling to remind me, I was able to shed some light on the matter with the company’s CEO,” she said.
She added that this was the second sizable donation that her company had given to sports this year and said that they are willing to offer assistance when necessary.
President of the GFA, Troy Mendonca, said that his association was thankful for the support of the Barama Company and urged other companies to support football.
Speaking in the brief presentation ceremony at the Tucville ground, Mendonca said: “Today marks a significant day for football in Guyana and we at the GFA in our effort to significantly impact the promoting of the sport, will embark with the Fruta Conquerors club to have at least one proper stand for spectators, sponsors officials and players.”
He added that his association was aware of the hindrances caused by the poor seating facilities at the Tucville ground and other playing venues, and was seeking assistance from different companies to help rectify this situation.
