One week after being crowned `King’ and `Queen’ at the Guyana Squash Association’s National Senior Championships, Kristian Jeffrey and Nicolette Fernandes dethroned the defending champions at the 2008 Subaru St Lucia Open Squash championships to cart off the male and female titles.
Jeffrey played undefeated throughout the tournament before dispatching defending champion Josh Pinard in four games.
After jumping out to a tough 9/5 victory in the first game, the 19-year-old Jeffrey lost the second game 1/9.
He quickly regained focus however, and won the next two games 9/1 and 9/5 to claim his first ever men’s title at the St Lucia open.
Fernandes avenged her upset to Karen Meakins by putting the defending champion out of her misery in three quick games 9/0 9/0 9/3.
The St Lucia Open marked Fernandes’ first regional tournament since being sidelined from the sport after sustaining a career-threatening injury which has caused her to slip down the world rankings after peaking at 27th last year.
Fernandes also placed third in the male category of the GSA national championships last week after being allowed to play in both categories as a test to asses her game on her return to the sport.
