Misfortune and a series of errors were the contributing factors to the downfall of an inexperienced Guyana Rugby Under-19 team as the Cayman Island ran out 21-13 winners at the Garrison Rugby Playfield in Barbados in the North America West Indies Rugby Association National (NAWIRA) Rugby World Cup 2008 Qualifier yesterday.
A lightning fast try by Kizan Brumell for Guyana got the game moving early in the first half but unfortunately it was not converted.
Guyana, however, pushed further ahead with a successful penalty kick from England-based Rupert Giles but Cayman Islands got in the game as Gillame Hammersley scored a penalty kick as the first half ended 8-3.
When play resumed, it was a totally different ball game as Hammersley hammered in two more penalty kicks to give the Cayman Islands team the lead which they extended after Mathew Hake and Ed Western scored tries one of which was converted.
Guyana’s Jamaal Yarde scored a try in an attempt to revive the team’s fortune but the try was futile as Guyana ended on 13 points at the final whistle.
“Our decision making was what defeated us; Cayman Islands didn’t defeat us, we defeated ourselves,” said head coach Laurence Adonis.
Adonis also implied that it was not the end of the road for there was still hope for Guyana.Guyana will take on Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow in the second match of the group.
