Ten months after he was released from prison after serving a four-month sentence, Barry Joe is headed there again for ten months this time unless he can stump up $20,000 to pay a fine.
Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday gave Joe the choice when he appeared before her charged with damaging his mother’s furniture because she refused to provide him with money to buy marijuana.
Joe, of Broad Street, Charlestown, pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously damaging the property of Esther Cambridge.
On July 2, Joe damaged one drawer and mirror, together worth $6,000, belonging to his mother when she refused to furnish him with money to buy marijuana.
Cambridge told the court that her son was released from prison on June 22 after spending four months there for another matter. She explained that she lived with her son and on the day in question he became violent after she refused to give him money “to smoke”.
Joe is to pay a fine of $20,000 or serve a ten-month sentence.
