Vigilance woman missing since Sunday

Four days after she left to go to a creek with a male friend, 22-year-old Alexis Porter is yet to return home and her mother fears that she may have been harmed.

The girl’s mother, Yevette Porter, said her daughter left their Vigilance home on Sunday morning in the company of a male friend from the same village stating that they were going to a creek on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway. The young man, whom she knows only as ‘Shallow’ returned home since Sunday night and has since told the young woman’s mother that she had joined other friends at the creek and said she would go home with them, so he left her at the creek.

The two, along with a number of other friends, were at the creek.

However, Yevette Porter said she did not buy the story told to her by the young man as, according to her, Alexis would never stay away from home for so many days without contacting her. She has since reported the matter to the police and hopes they would question the young man and his friends about her daughter’s whereabouts.

Porter said she was not sure if her daughter and the young man were involved in a relationship. She said that as far as she knew, her daughter had no boyfriend but ‘Shallow’ was the only person who would visit her at home and they would sit and talk.

Porter said that on the morning when Alexis left for the creek the young man had visited the house on three occasions looking for her.

Alexis left the house after his third visit, telling her mother she was going to the creek; she had a bag in her possession. When she did not return home on Sunday evening, Porter said, she became worried. But she waited the entire next day and only went to the man’s house on Tuesday. She did not explain why she took that long to contact the man after her daughter failed to return home, but said she got really worried after she heard about the East Bank accident on Sunday night and even though she was told that only males had died, she decided to visit the hospital as she felt her daughter might have been admitted to the hospital.

Before going to the hospital on Tuesday, Porter said, she went to the young man’s home and was surprised to find him at home. She said she called for the young man, and when he came out and saw her, he placed one of his hands over his face and stood for a while before speaking to her. When asked about Alexis, Porter said, the young man told her that during the day the young woman had picked up her bag and said she was going to return home with a bus driven by someone from Victoria. He said he left her at the creek and arrived home around 7 pm.

Porter said she then asked the young man why he had not visited her home the next morning to ensure that Alexis had returned home safely, since from all appearances the two were good friends.

She told him that she was going to visit the hospital as the young woman could have been involved in an accident and he volunteered to accompany her. After visiting the Georgetown Public Hospital and finding no signs of her they were advised to visit the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. A visit there proved to be futile.

‘Parables’

According to Porter, when they arrived at the East Coast car park, the young man told her they should visit the Upscale Restaurant as some of the persons who were with them worked there. She said the disc jockey (DJ) at the restaurant and two girls she spoke to on the phone told her that her daughter was with them the entire day but when they were leaving they looked for her but she was not there.

Another friend was called but he did not speak to Porter. Instead, he said he wanted to speak to ‘Shallow’. At this point, Porter said, they were at Quality Restaurant near the East Coast bus park. She said that after speaking on the phone, ‘Shallow’ told her that the friend would come to restaurant to speak to him. Porter said it appeared that the friend did not want to speak to her and she was told as much by ‘Shallow’.

When he finally arrived at the restaurant, Porter said, the friend, whose call name is ‘R Kelly’, spoke to ‘Shallow’ in “parables”. One of the things he told him was “when you carry you sand to the creek you must bring it back.”
She said ‘R Kelly’ told her that he did not want any police story as he was before the court at present on a “frame charge” and was out on $50,000 bail. He also told Porter that her daughter had been “disrespectful” to ‘Shallow’ and his friends as while she was in their minibus at the creek another young man had gone to the bus and placed his arm around her neck. ‘R Kelly’ said he told her that “it does not happen that way” and she said “sorry sir”.

Porter told this newspaper that ‘R Kelly’ then turned to ‘Shallow’ and said “you go involve all these people [the group of friends who were at the creek] fuh one stupid lil girl?”

She said she then asked ‘Shallow’ what ‘R Kelly’ meant by some of the things he had said, but he gave her no proper answer.

Porter said she reported her daughter missing on Wednesday at the Vigilance Police Station and was told that the station would send out an all-points bulletin to alert all stations and that if she got any further information she should return to the station.

The woman said she decided to visit Eve Leary the same day and yesterday she got a call from an officer who told her to return to the Vigilance Police Station and ask for specific police officers.

According to Porter, Alexis, the fifth of 13 children, never slept out without telling her. She said that on occasions when her daughter stayed with friends she would say she was going to spend a few days.

Porter is very worried as she said Alexis would have made contact with her family if everything was alright.

She said she hoped the police would take her report seriously and investigate her daughter’s disappearance.
