Robin Persaud yesterday won the Progressive Youth Organization (PYO) 56-mile cycle road race in honour of the 1973 Ballot Box Martyrs when he defeated Ian `Dumb Boy’ Jackson in a driving finish.
Christopher Holder placed third while fourth, fifth and sixth positions were occupied by Junior Niles, Neil Reece and Enzo Matthews respectively.
Persaud captured three of the eight prime prizes with Niles and Holder each winning two and Jackson one.
Holder took top spot in the junior category from Reece with Matthews third.
The winner of the veteran category was Kennard Lovell who turned the tables on Gary Benjamin with Linden Blackman third.
Dexter Wilson was the winner of the upright category from Shawn Frank and Edward Wilson in that order.
The event was held to mark the 35th anniversary of the martyrs, Jagan Ramessar and Bholanauth Parmanand and present at yesterday’s event were Navin Chanderpaul, Director of Sport Neil Kumar and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony who is First Secretary of the PYO.
The event started at 9am outside Freedom House in New Amsterdam proceeded to Corriverton Police Station and returned to Number 63 Village for the finish.
