-primed for start of team event today
For the second year running Guyana won the most individual titles by one country at the Caribbean Squash Area Association junior squash championships in Bermuda.
True to their seedings Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Keisha Jeffrey ensured that Guyana took home three of the four individual titles in the girls category.
Arjoon and Fung-A-Fat completely dominated their finals, only allowing their opponents three and two points respectively. The girls’ under-17 final between sisters Kayla and Keisha Jeffery was a lot closer than the 3-0 margin would suggest, with Kayla Jeffrey reaching game ball first in each of the first two games.
In the end it was the more accomplished Keisha who claimed her third individual title in the past four years. In the boys’ under-17 category Alexander Arjoon came up against the highly touted Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands. Stafford came out strong, hitting nick after nick to blow Arjoon off the court in the first two games. The match seemed to be over when Stafford raced out to a 7-1 lead in the third but as is always the case Arjoon never gave up. Stafford reached match ball at 8-3 but Arjoon continued to play good tight squash and slowly worked his way back into the match. He took the third 10/8 and fought hard in the fourth, but by this time both players were spent and it was Stafford’s deadly drops that decided the match. There were also a couple of outstanding performances for the Guyanese in the boys’ under-17 and girls’ under-19 third place playoffs.
Oliver Downes came from two games down and fought off two match points to overcome the tough Kale Wilson of Trinidad and Tobago while Daina King’s third place win over Cayman’s Samantha Hennings was even more impressive when she fought off three match points to prevail 10/8 in fifth.
With the individual events fully behind them, the Guyanese players are now primed for the start of the team events today where they will be looking to capture the boys and girls team events.
