Team Guyana looking for clean sweep

Team Guyana will be looking to complete a clean sweep of the 2008 CASA Caribbean Junior Squash Championships after the girls and boys’ teams advanced to today’s finals where they are scheduled to meet Bermuda teams.

The Guyana girls team, who were ranked number one in the team event after winning  titles in 2006 and 2007, erased all thoughts of a possible upset by Jamaica in the semi-finals by racing into the final with a 5-0 win.

Alex Arjoon Having already wiped the floor against the girls from the home team 5-0 in the round robin competition the Guyanese girls are definitely favourites to win this year’s team event and wrap up their third consecutive title triumph at these championships.

The Guyana boys’ team on the other hand,  was ranked number two but got over their biggest hump so far when they secured a  close  3-2 victory against the number-one ranked Trinidad and Tobago side in the semi-finals.

In the tough encounter with Trinidad  the GT boys got wins when it counted most from   Alex Arjoon, Raphael deGroot and Oliver Kear-Downes to secure the wins needed to advance.

Raphael deGroot Trinidad’s victories came from under-13 champion Nku Patrick and his older brother Mandela Patrick who overcame a 0-2 deficit to secure a come-from-behind 3-2 win against Abhishek Singh.
The GT boys will face number-four ranked Bermuda, who defeated OECS 3-2 in the semi-finals in
a rematch of an earlier round robin encounter that Guyana won 3-2.
