Veteran public relations practitioner and sports administrator John Emanuel Nestor (M.S). a former employee of Banks DIH Ltd., passed away yesterday, a release from the company stated. He was 93 years of age.
“Uncle John” as he was fondly, who was born on July 29, 1914 joined Banks DIH Ltd in the early `70s and served as Public Relations Officer (PRO) for many years before retiring.
According to the release, Nestor was an ardent athlete and sports administrator who represented Guyana at football and volleyball and participated in several sports disciplines including lawn tennis, billiards, cricket, bridge, table tennis and track and field during the 1930s and `40s.
As a sports administrator, Nestor was a member on the National Sports Council and had the distinction of serving as president of the Guyana Volleyball Association, president of the Guyana Billiards Association, president of the New Amsterdam Volleyball, Table Tennis and Football associations, president of the Pacesetters Basketball Club and patron of the Dorado Swimming Club.
Chairman of Banks DIH Ltd. Clifford B. Reis CCH, in paying tribute to his late colleague and friend said that `Uncle John’ was well respected and well liked during his tenure at Banks DIH.
“He was a father figure to all employees and he showed great interest in their welfare. He came from the old school and because of his love for sports he instilled disciplined to those who came in contact with him,” Reis said.
Nestor was instrumental in promoting sports within Banks DIH and the country at large.
In 1996 he was awarded the Medal of Service (MS) for valuable contribution to sports at the national and regional level.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Banks DIH regrets the passing of Nestor, the release stated.
