Michael Jackson, the driver who was injured when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle on the Ogle Access road on Tuesday, left the country yesterday to seek further medical attention.
Jackson who is attached to an interior charter service was shot in the buttocks during the ordeal which police suspect was an attempted robbery. He was admitted to hospital but discharged himself on Friday after a suspicious man went into the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was.
The man was arrested by police stationed at the Georgetown Hospital and is still in custody, assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, the trio who were arrested by police on Friday after a car suspected to have been used to transport the gunmen was found at a Norton Street house, were also still in police custody up to press time.
Police are still on the hunt for ‘Trini’, ‘Yankee’, ‘Capone’ and ‘Sandman’, who they say they want in connection with the incident.
Reports reaching this newspaper are that as the car left the aerodrome, occupants noticed a maroon-coloured car parked at the side of the road and as they approached four men armed with high-powered rifles opened fire. The men then entered their car and sped after the vehicle Jackson was driving, discharging rounds in the process. Jackson, despite being shot, managed to drive to the Sparendaam Police Station. Another passenger, Vanessa Mendonca sustained cuts on her knee from broken glass while the other three escaped unhurt. The occupants of Jackson’s vehicle that this newspaper spoke to had said that they were unable to recognize any of the men because they were screaming and concentrating on getting to safety. A source close to the interior charter service, told Stabroek News yesterday that the company did not transport gold and diamonds as was being reported in some sections of the media. Rather, the source said, goods inclusive of ice cream and other eatables are transported to and from the interior and in some cases, people.
