The National Legacy Run, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and PAHO/WHO will take place this morning.
The Legacy Run is part of the Ministry’s Fit for Life Programme which is designed to get Guyanese to keep fit by exercising for 30 minutes everyday.
Today’s run which is an annual event, is in its second year having been launched last year to usher in Cricket World Cup, 2007 at the Guyana National Cricket Stadium.
This year, the run will be used as a fore–runner to CARIFESTA X which kicks off next month.
Some 500 participants drawn from Sport Associat-ions/Clubs, Gyms, Educat-ional/Religious Institutions, Military and Para – Military Organizations, Persons with Disabilities and Trade Unions are expected to be involved in today’s event.
The 10km run will commence simultaneously at 06:00h from three points – Guyoil Service Station on Sheriff Street, Friendship on the East Bank Demerara and the Vreed–en–Hoop Junction and end inside the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
The Hon. Ministers of Culture, Youth and Sport (Dr. Frank Anthony), Health (Dr. Leslie Ramsammy) and Public Service (Dr. Jennifer Westford) will each send the participants off.
PAHO/ WHO will donate the jerseys for participants and officials, certificates of participation and banners.
The Ministry of Health will provide ambulance and health personnel throughout the run while the Guyana Police Force will provide security and traffic control for participants and officials.
Transportation will be available to assist participants and officials return to their main locations and trophies will be presented to the following categories:- Largest Contingent, Most Organized Contingent and People with Disabilities.
