Construction on the new Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security building is progressing with the foundation laid and work being done to frame curb walls and erect columns
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release about two weeks ago the foundation was laid for the US$3M building at Princes and High streets. Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir said, “We are now looking at the award of the contracts for the electrical aspect and the design for the air conditioning of the building.”
Currently labour staffers are working from a number of locations including offices at Brickdam, North Road and Camp Street. On its completion the new building will house all departments including probation, child care, child protection, a documentation centre, pensions, public assistance, and the central recruitment and manpower agency. The decision to construct a new building was taken after the ministry’s operation was decentralized after a fire in 2001.
The ministry is currently located at Cornhill and Water streets.
According to GINA the building is expected to be completed by November.
