A 36-year-old man, who allegedly robbed another of just over $220,000 worth of cash, jewellery and other items, was placed on $50,000 bail when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Troy Smith of 108 Thomas Street, Kitty pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery with aggravation. However, after listening to his explanation Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
It is alleged that on July 20 he robbed Totaram Ramdat of $221,000 worth of valuables.
Smith told the court that on the night in question he left his house and ended up buying an ice cream.
According to the accused, he was wearing a green jersey and hat. He explained that he was standing in the vicinity of the place where he bought the ice cream when he was approached by a police officer. Smith said he was informed that a robbery had just occurred in the area and that a man wearing a green jersey and hat had done it. The man told the court that although he was wearing clothes of that description he was not the person who committed the robbery.
He was placed on $50,000 bail and the matter is to continue on August 22 in Court Two.
