Yet another taxi driver was the victim of a robbery and attempted car-jacking after he picked up three men who requested a drop off at ‘C’ Field, Sophia. He was also injured fighting back with his assailants.
Thirty-two-year-old Edward Jerioh of 36 ‘B’ Albert Street suffered an injury to his left eye and abrasions about his forehead after he was gun-butted and cuffed about the face by his assailants around 11 pm on Wednesday.
The driver, attached to the Sheriff Taxi Service, related to Stabroek News that he picked up three strangers who stopped his car on Sheriff Street.
He said that they requested to be taken to ‘C’ Field, Sophia. However, when he got to ‘B’ Field, one of the men pulled out a gun and ordered him to stop the car. Jerioh said he drove up a little more and then stopped and the men demanded that he hand over his cash and jewellery. He said he refused to do so and one of the men hit him. He retaliated and a scuffle ensued in the car.
According to Jerioh, a shot was fired in the car but did not hit anyone. He said he then jumped out of the car and started to run but the men caught up with him and took his keys and money. Several more shots were fired then, but none of them hit him.
The men then returned to the car and drove off, and Jerioh said he started to run behind the car. The men then apparently had a change of heart, exited the car and ran off around the corner.
Jerioh said that he went back into his car and drove around the same corner, where he encountered another driver from his base.
Just then too, Jerioh said, he saw one of the three men who had attempted to take his car and accosted him. He said the man proceeded to call some other men who arrived on the scene and another fight ensued. By this time, the other driver had proceeded to the Kitty Police Station to report the matter. Officers arrived on the scene and took Jerioh to the hospital.
Jerioh said he identified one of the men to the police last night and his car is currently at the Brickdam Police Station pending investigations into the matter.
