Father Kevin and son Kristian Jeffrey will be looking to have yet another triumphant weekend for the Jeffrey family when they compete in their respective events today at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club Ultimate Race of Champions meet at the South Dakota Circuit.
Just last weekend at the CASA Caribbean Junior Squash Championships the daughters and younger sisters of the father and son racing duo, Keisha and Kayla Jeffrey savoured the taste of victory for their country.
The twin sisters swept the under-17 girls’ category finishing first and second (Keisha won) before guiding the Guyana girls team to the dominant win in the girls’ team event last weekend.
This weekend it will be “game-on” for the Jeffrey family once again.
This time, however, the event will involve pistons and drive shafts as opposed to racquets and balls.
Opponents put ‘pedal to the metal’ and ‘burn rubber’ on the asphalt of the South Dakota Circuit.
Kevin Jeffrey is returning to the sport of burning rubber. It is a sport Jeffrey has loved since his days as one of the top bikers in the country.
Having completed the switch from top biker to top driver Jeffrey will undoubtedly be a threat in the Group Four category especially since he emphatically stole the checkered flag in one of the races in the last meet with his newly acquired All-wheel drive 450 horsepower Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII.
“The win at the last meet proved that I can run with the top competitors in the group like Andrew King and Mark Vieira. Those guys have proven time and time again that they are the ones to beat and hopefully with the adjustment I made I will be able to challenge them,” he said.
Jeffrey told Stabroek Sport that he has now lowered his Evo VIII closer to the ground and hopes it will improve its cornering speed and overall handling.
The Evo VIII is generically marked by its superb handling and cornering ability and material used in the construction of the upper body was made lighter than the previous evolution models to lower the centre of gravity thereby reducing the car’s centre of gravity and increasing stability.
Leave with the
checkered flag
Meanwhile Kristian Jeffrey, who currently leads the points standing in the 125cc shifter go-karts category, said he hoped to continue the winning ways exhibited at the race meets earlier this year.
“So far for the year I was champion driver for all two of the race meets and I am entering this event leading in the points standing.
“I am looking to continue such performances on Sunday and I feel confident entering the meet,” he said.
Kristian also told Stabroek Sport that today’s meeting may be his last before he departs the country to further his studies overseas and would like to leave on a winning not.
“So far my kart has been prepared well thanks to my father and Brian Ten Pow and since this may probably be my last race meet before I go off to school, we are hoping that I leave on a good note.”
His nearest challenger in that category is his cousin Stefan Jeffrey who has trails Kristian by eight points.
