Fruta Conquerors football Club received wake-up call from Georgetown Football Club (GFC) when the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Cellink Plus Premier League Football Competition resumed on Friday at the Tucville Playfield with a double header.
The Conquerors were upset by GFC 1-0 in the final match of the evening while Santos Football Club (FC) and Sunburst Camptown played to a draw in the opening encounter.
GFC, who are becoming more positive as the tournament progresses, played intense football in both halves.
At the end of the first half the score was 0-0 despite constant attacks on Fruta Conquerors’ goal.
Upon resumption, Gregory Denny blasted a right foot shot past the Conquerors’ custodian from outside the 18-yard box on the right flank to give GFC the edge in the 46th minute.
The goal was to prove decisive.
GFC’s victory bumps them up to 13 points and also pushes them ahead of Conquerors who are still on 11 points.
Tournament leader, Sunburst Camptown, who began their battle with Santos Football Club (F.C) on 17 points after the first round are now on 18 points following the draw their second in succession following their 1-1 draw with Fruta Conquerors in their final game of the first round.
Santos, playing with the memory of the 8-1 whipping they received in their final match of round one against the Guyana Defence Force, somewhat revived themselves to earn a 2-2 draw with Camptown.
Chris Camacho scored the first goal of the match for Santos in the 76th minute after a goalless first 45 minutes before Lance Rawlston equalized two minutes later.
With regulation time approaching Rawlston made it a 2-1 game when he found the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
Santos, who seemed determined not to go down without a fight got an invitation to score and happily accepted with Glenorven Edmonds being successful three minutes regulation time.
That draw takes Santos to four points. They are one rung from the bottom of the table just above Uprising FC who have one point.
Camptown leads the league with 17 points followed by GDF (14), Alpha United (12), GFC (13), Fruta Conquerors (11) and Pele (8).
