The Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) has made a $1M donation to the CARIFESTA Secretariat for the youth aspect of the festival, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Handing over the cheque on Monday at the Secretariat to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony was Regional Director of CYP Henry Charles. He said his organisation’s decision to support the CARIFESTA youth village stemmed from the similarities between the objectives of the CYP and the youth village.
These include providing a forum for showcasing talent and the creative expressions of youths, cultural diversity of the Caribbean and providing vocational and life skills
“While the principles under which we work speak to advocating for the development of indigenous capital, research and technology and the promotion of cultural heritage and values to enable youth development and the objectives of the youth village there is a broader vision and that is part of the whole promotional piece of democracy,” Charles was quoted by GINA as saying.
The CYP, GINA added, also intends to contribute to the literary aspect of CARIFESTA by highlighting writings, video and other documentaries on various aspects of youth development in the Caribbean. These literary materials, Charles said, will be free of cost and will serve as manuals or tools for youth development.
He said too that a significant number of youths will be among the delegations coming for CARIFESTA and if requested can benefit from the CYP. The CYP operates through its regional office in Guyana and also through connections throughout the Caribbean.
