A 30-year-old man, who is alleged to have been one of three men who robbed a fuel truck leaving the Aroaima bauxite camp on Wednesday night, died after a barrel of fuel fell on his head.
This newspaper understands that last Wednesday night three men in a burgundy pick-up attempted to rob a fuel truck exiting the Aroaima bauxite camp.
During the process one of the three alleged bandits, Gabriel Leacock, fell out of the pick-up’s tray and was killed after a barrel of stolen fuel fell on his head.
According to a resident, on the night of the alleged robbery, the men were waiting outside the bauxite camp.
The truck carrying the fuel, the resident explained, had to pass through a security checkpoint before exiting the camp.
After the truck had passed the security checkpoint three men launched an attack and robbed it of some fuel.
The security at the camp’s checkpoint was alerted to the robbery and they fired off a number of shots. The men, this newspaper was told, became scared and attempted to escape.
Leacock, who was sitting in the tray of the pick-up, fell off during their escape and his head was crushed by a barrel of fuel which toppled out of the vehicle’s tray after him.
Stabroek News understands that the vehicle is registered to a man from Ituni. The resident further explained that the fuel trucks are constantly being robbed.
