The University of Guyana’s Centre for Communication Studies under the auspices of UNESCO will be hosting a consultation on the state of journalism education and practice in Guyana at the new conference room of the National Library on Church and Main streets on August 12 and 13.
The consultation is being conducted under the theme UNESCO model Curricula for Journalism Education in the Context of Guyana, a UNESCO press release stated. The two-day exercise is also aimed at finding possible synergies and areas contained in the UNESCO draft which may be relevant in Guyana’s context.
Upon the advice of the consultation, the release said, the model may be adapted for use in the Centre for Communication Studies’ new curriculum roll out for its 2008-2009 session.
UG Vice-Chancellor Professor James Rose will open the consultation and Secretary General of the Guyana National Commission for UNESCO Inge Nathoo is also expected to address the opening.
The consultation will be facilitated by Guyanese-born Professor Vibert Cambridge, School of Media Arts & Studies, and Scripps College of Communication, Ohio University.
Cambridge is a professor of broadcasting and communications of more than 30 years who has published extensively on the subject.
Participants will include key media houses, professional media personnel, government policy makers and senior line staff and gatekeepers as well as staff and students of UG’s communication studies centre.
