The Alliance For Change (AFC) says party officials met with the Commissioner of Police (ag) Henry Greene on Tuesday to discuss the “maddening” traffic situation during sittings of Parliament.
In a press release, it said party leader Raphael Trotman, MP, accompanied by General Secretary Clayton Hall, and Members of Parliament Latchmin Punalall and David Patterson met with Greene.
The meeting followed a request by the AFC leader for a discussion with the Commissioner and his officers, in particular, on the “maddening” traffic situation which exists during sittings of the National Assembly.
The release noted that many persons had lodged complaints with AFC officials about the inconveniences, distress, and even fear experienced by them during these periods when sections of this busy part of the city are cordoned off.
The AFC, the release said, is satisfied that the police top brass is now appreciative of the situation, and is gratified with the promise made by the Commissioner to revisit the current arrangements as soon as possible without compromising the need to maintain high levels of security.
The party added that the opportunity was also taken by the AFC leaders to raise matters such as the pace of the investigation into the Lindo Creek massacre, the death of prisoners Edwin Niles and Nolan Noble, the increasing incidence of prisoners escaping from lawful custody, the security concerns of residents in Lusignan, the recent arrest and detention of scores of young men from the Agricola-Meadowbank area, and preparations for CARIFESTA.
The AFC promised its support to the Commissioner of Police and the Force, but, indicated that such support is based on respect for and observance of the rule of law and the protection of the rights of citizens by the Guyana Police Force.
It was agreed that engagements between the AFC and the Force would be ongoing.
