When the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) staged their National Intermediate Weightlifting Championship last Sunday, Sean Cozier, Marvis Williams and Fazim Abdool stole the show at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Cozier, a member of the True Foundation Gym produced the highest bodyweight coefficient of the championship which was 290.56kg.
The 94kg class lifter finished ahead of Hardcore Gym’s Abdool who had amassed 276.01kg to claim the third highest bodyweight coefficient of the tournament. Guest lifter in the 69kg class Marvis Williams belted a total of 276.56kg to occupy the second highest bodyweight coefficient in the tournament, finishing ahead of the only other competitor in that class who was Bhojnarine Persaud (197.5kg).
A total of fourteen participants contested the event from three affiliated member gyms in nine categories.
And in the schoolboys under 50kg weight class Kelwin Josiah of Barim’s Gym was the victor after he snatched 42.5kg and clean and jerked 52.5kg for a maximum total of 95kg, while second and third were his gym mates Derron Wright and Teon Wilson with 80kg and 70kg totals respectively.
Derrick Hyman and Kelvin Moore of Barim’s Gym came in first and second respectively in the school boys over 50kg class after accumulating 112.5kg and 100kg respectively.
Lone lifters Sherland Wilson and Roberto Tiwari amassed 137.5kg and 157.5kg in the Junior Men’s (62kg) and Men’s Open (69kg) classes respectively.
With a total of 160kg by a sum of 70kg (snatch) and 90kg (C&J) Dorian Scott won the 77kg weight class.
Adjoda Hattinchand of Barim’s Gym won the 85kg class with a total of 190kg while Len Johnson also of Barim’s Gym won the 105+ kg class with a bodyweight coefficient of 190kg.
Meanwhile, GAWA’s team to attend the Criollo Cup Championship in Caguas, Puerto Rico from October 21-26 will be announced shortly while their National Senior’s Weightlifting Championship will be staged on November 9, 2008.
