‘Dancing beyond boundaries’ is the theme under which the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s 14th Naya Zamana will be staged next Saturday night at the National Culture Centre with a cast of sixty male and female dancers.
In a press release organisers promised “a culturally stimulating, visual and educational extravaganza.” The release said that the production would explore a range of traditional Asian dance forms and “seeks to move some of these time-honoured dances in exciting new directions.” It promises to be a heartening look at “an age-old genre of dance that is undergoing conscious reinvention at the hands of its own preservers.”
“The classical dance techniques have been combined with alternative disciplines and rhythms,” the release continued. The organisers said that the choreographers have taken their training in classical dance beyond the confines of strict tradition, “adding folk and creative themes, innovative lighting, unusual and grand props and whimsical and glitzy costumes to create new motifs.”
Naya Zamana, which has been around for some time, caters to the imagination of the Guyanese audience never remaining “static and creating a stir year after year with its changing formats.” Patrons this year can look forward to a spectacular kaleidoscope of moving pictures painted in dance to music new and old.
Dancers from the Dharmic Nritya Sangh – Sookrane Boodhoo, Mohan Nandu and Suchitra Rampersaud – are expected to “weave a spell of musical magic and captivating dance.” Tickets are available at the National Cultural Centre, Bhagwan’s on Water Street, The Murti Shop, West Coast Demerara and Dharmic Kendra, Prashad Nagar.
