Suriname overcame an early 0-1 deficit to score three unanswered goals and secure a 3-1 victory against Dominica last night at the National Stadium at Providennce in the second Group `B’ match of the Digicel Caribbean Championships football tournament.
The win eliminated Dominica who had lost to Guyana by a 0-3 score in the opening game on Friday at the same venue.
Dominica’s Prince Austrio registered his name on the score sheet when he capitalized on a defensive breakdown and found the net in the eighth minute.
Austrio’s goal lifted his team’s morale and inspired the support of the few local fans who realized that Suriname’s demise would put their team in a good position for today’s grand finale.
However, the momentum would not stay on Dominica’s side as a ruthless Suriname attack saw them equalizing in the 18th minute when Suriname’s captain Marlon Felter converted a penalty kick.
Dominca’s goalkeeper was made to work hard after the Suriname strikers found their rhythm late in the first half and took away three possible goals to ensure the score remained 1-1 at half time.
In the second half, there was not much Prince could do and Clifton Sanduliet put Suriname up 2-1 in the 54th minute.
The three forwards employed in Suriname’s attack, proved to be effective against Dominica’s defense.
The Suriname midfielders threaded needles to find their forwards, who created many opportunities for themselves as they took the Dominica defenders off their footing with dazzling and perplexing dribbles.
Dominica’s Paul Victor got a chance to score the equalizer but choked on a penalty kick.
Minutes later, Suriname put the game out of their reach with the third and final goal scored by Ferdinand Jap-A-Joe.
Suriname will face Guyana,s National team the Golden Jaguars this evening at the National Stadium, Providence from 7pm in a rematch of the World Cup qualifiers that Guyana lost 1-2 in June.
