The Mayor and City Council says that action will be taken against persons who continue to dump dead bodies within the limits of the Le Repentir cemetery.
A statement issued by Public Relations Officer Royston King said yesterday that the council was troubled about the issue which had serious implications for the public health of our city and its citizens, and that the negative affects caused by the dumping of dead bodies was totally unacceptable.
King said that some time ago the council had embarked on rehabilitation works at the mortuary, with special emphasis on the overhauling of the chilling room. However a vital component for the chilling room had been stolen and had not been replaced as yet, since it was not available locally. As such the chilling room was not working. King said that the Treasurer’s department was trying to locate the part overseas. Notwithstanding this some funeral homes insisted on dumping dead bodies around the facility apparently with no care as to the negative health effects this could have on the society.
King said that the city could not tolerate this kind of behaviour from anyone and the necessary authorities would take the necessary steps to ensure that these practices were eliminated.
