A bandit escaped from police, even though he was apparently shot after robbing a man on Church Street yesterday.
The man, who was robbed, told reporters that the bandit came up to him and relieved him of money and a chain. The incident occurred after mid-day yesterday. The victim, who did not want to state his name, said that the bandit then ran away but he called a friend in the police force, and ranks responded quickly. Other reports state that the bandit had robbed other persons before and was being trailed.
This newspaper was told that at Church and Wellington streets, the police fired upon the bandit, apparently hitting him in the left shoulder. It was stated that around eight shots were fired. The apparently injured man ran into yards that adjoined Globe Yard and disappeared after apparently jumping over a fence.
Heavily armed ranks could not locate him. Persons on the scene, while praising the police for their prompt response said that their manner of operation left something to be desired. One man said that an overweight policeman could not jump over a trench to follow the injured bandit, while another seemed more concerned when his sun-shades fell down. Persons said that at least one police rank’s magazine fell out of the gun and stated that the manner in which the ranks fired their guns was “wild”.
A trail of blood marked the area where the bandit ran. A number of police ranks descended upon the area but could not locate the injured bandit.
