– Strike Again occupy third spot
Better football from Guyana Beverages Inc. (GBI) sponsored Fruta Conquerors saw them crushing their opponents Sunburst Camptown in the final of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/ Courts sponsored Pee Wee Under-11 competition at Banks DIH, Thirst Park ground Thursday night.
In a low-scoring yet heart-stopping encounter Con-querors, buoyed by the recommitment of their sponsor earlier in the day along with an extra financial boost should they win the competition, put down Camptown 1-0, while Strike Again eased past Beacon United by a 2-1 margin to take the third place spot in the tournament.
From as early as the first half, it was evident that Conquerors had a more solid formation than the Contin-ental Group of Companies sponsored Camptown and it was soon confirmed when striker Romello Fraser received a long ball from wide on the left flank and rocketed it past the gloves of Levar Baptiste in goal for Camptown in the 11th minute.
It could have been 1-1 at the end of the first half, but the chance of a Camptown equalizer was waved off by the referee, after striker Jason Williams’ shot catapulted back out after hitting the back of the bar on the inside, much to the displeasure of the fair size crowd.
Resuming 1-0 after halftime both teams launched numerous attacks on opposite goals but all efforts were either off target or denied by the custodians, and at the end of the 40-minute affair, Fruta Conquerors were crowned the 2008 GFA/Courts Pee Wee champions.
Strike Again outdid Beacon United in the long run to win the third place spot of the tournament. Strike Again drew first blood five minutes into the second half after a goalless first half when Haiasi Jones found the back of the net.
Beacon United found the equalizer in the 28th minute when Keron Heywood got past the defenders and found the back of the net, forcing the game into extra time.
Neither team could produce a goal in the first half of extra time but a lobbed ball from a throw-in on the right side caused a goal mouth scrimmage and Kurt Steele made no mistake by blasting it into the back of the net in the final minute.
The competition began on May 8, and a total of 88 goals were scored, nine of which belonged to Beacon’s Keron Heywood who won the Highest Goal Scorer award.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Fruta Conquerors Ryan Hackett while Plaisance Panthers were adjudged the Most Disciplined Team and Levar Baptiste the Best Goal Keeper respectively. Meanwhile, Michelle Gravesande was named as the Most Supportive Parent.
