The Joint Services yesterday descended on the East Coast Demerara village of Buxton and may have set up camps as part of increased security.
Though neither the police nor the army has said anything about a semi-permanent presence in the area, a number of ranks were being taken into the community yesterday afternoon and there was a heightened presence in and around the community.
Vehicles with policemen and soldiers were also spotted at the entrance to neighbouring villages.
However when this newspaper visited the village was peaceful and persons were seen on the railway embankment.
They insisted that they did not know what may have spurred the increased presence of the lawmen but said that earlier in the day there was talk in the community that the lawmen may have gotten word that some suspicious elements were in the community.
However this newspaper was told that the lawmen have since occupied a few abandoned houses in the community and were seen fetching in mattresses and other material which suggest that they men may be there for some time.
The Joint Services yesterday announced heightened security for Carifesta X.
