Two men who sustained gunshot wounds under mysterious circumstances on Sunday night at Aranka Landing up the Cuyuni River were yesterday transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.
Roger Wade, 31, of Plantation Brahan, West Coast Berbice sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen while Nevin Morgan, 27, of Lot 4 Public Road, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara was shot in his groin. Up to last evening both men were in serious but stable condition but the bullet had not yet been removed from Wade.
The men were transferred by boat and escorted by one police officer and a nurse from the Bartica Hospital and taken to the GPHC where Wade was taken to the theatre to undergo surgery and Morgan was treated in the emergency room.
When this newspaper visited the hospital, uniformed policemen showed up looking for the men and Morgan’s sister confirmed that he was arrested and placed in handcuffs and was under police guard while being treated.
Morgan’s mother told Stabroek News at the hospital yesterday that she spoke to her son and he told her that he was not aware of how he got shot. She said that Morgan told her that a friend woke him up and they decided to go to a party. In the midst of partying, the woman said that Morgan told her he felt a burning sensation and then realized blood was running down his leg.
After that the man said that he could not remember anything else until he was in the boat being transferred from Bartica. His mother also told this newspaper that her son told her he does not know the other man who was shot. She refuted any allegations that her son was wanted for anything. She said that he had ventured into the area to work with someone who had a mining claim some two weeks ago.
In the meantime Wade’s mother told Stabroek News that she does not know anything about the circumstances of the shooting as she has not spoken to anyone who was there or her son.
Meanwhile a police press release issued last evening said that the police are investigating the incident which occurred about 1:30 am yesterday. The release said that investigations have so far revealed that both men were imbibing on the landing when shots were fired. It is not clear how the two men were shot, the release said.
