The new Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) has deployed mobile units to several communities in order to ensure that consumers can buy sugar at affordable prices.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release this action was taken on the instructions of Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud in the wake of recent reports that the price for sugar had risen.
Over the last several months the GMC had deployed mobile units to various communities after residents reported that the price of the commodity had risen sharply. The units had retailed commodities such as sugar, rice and flour. It was noted that cross-border smuggling with neighbouring Suriname via the Corentyne River and hoarding by some retailers contributed to the hike in prices.
