As part of this year’s Carifesta X celebrations which will run from August 22-31, there will be workshops and master classes.
The majority of these sessions will be conducted by overseas personnel participating in Carifesta, including 1992 Nobel Prize winner Derek Walcott, Rex Nettleford, Oliver Samuels, Rawle Gibbons and Henry Muttoo.
According to the schedule released by the Secretariat, the first of these sessions is a drama workshop conducted by the Venezuelans. This will be held at the Umana Yana on the 23rd from 10 am to 11:30 am.
On the following day at the same venue, a master artist workshop is scheduled to be facilitated by Jamaican Oliver Samuels and Glen Campbell.
This workshop runs from 10 am to midday.
Later that day at the Youth Village in the National Park, there will be a workshop on Capoeira beginning at 1 pm. Capoeira originated in Brazil and is a blend of martial arts, games and dance. Two other workshops of this kind are also scheduled. One will be at the Lichas Hall in Linden on the 26th at 1 pm and the other will be at the Tain Campus on August 30, from 10 am to midday.
On the 25th and 26th, the Brazilian Cultural Centre will be hosting a workshop on Brazilian Theatre. The facilitator is Nelson Rodriques and each session will begin at 10 am and end at 1 pm.
Walcott and David Dabydeen will hold a literary workshop on August 25th at Castellani House. This workshop begins at 1 pm and ends at 4 pm.
The Hospitality Village which is housed at the Carifesta Sports Complex will feature several of these workshops. On the 26th, it will host a forum on Intellectual Rights from 10 am to 11:30 am.
The Artistic Presentation by the delegation from St. Maarten will also be held at the Carifesta Sports Complex on the 26th August. The hour-long presentation will begin at 10 pm.
On August 27th, the CXC performing arts workshop will get underway at 10 am and will go until 1 pm. While the CXC arts workshop is going on, there will also be an art network forum which starts at 11 am at the same venue.
On the following day, a drama workshop will be conducted by Rawle Gibbons, Dani Lyndersay, Norvan Fullerton and Damian Richardson. This two-hour workshop begins at 10 am.
The Carifesta Sports Complex will also be the venue for a forum on Masquerade. The forum commences at 1 pm and will last for an hour.
Meanwhile, a master artist workshop will be facilitated by Mutoo, Henk Tjon, and Rawle Gibbons from 10 am to midday on August 29.
On August 30, Rex Nettleford will be conducting a lecture/demonstration on dance at the Umana Yana from 10 am to midday.
All these sessions are free but places are limited, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.
