Dear Editor,
The registry .gy website states that the Government of Guyana, through the Internet Oversight Committee in the Office of the President, has entrusted the management of Guyana’s top level domain (.gy) to the University of Guyana. I understand that the university is undergoing asbestos removal but that is no excuse for the current state of affairs where the .gy domain is concerned. I am certain it does not require much to process an application and send details to the registrant. Registrations at other top level domains are typically completed within 24 hours.
I paid UG’s IT Centre for domains almost two months ago and have yet to receive them. As an IT professional I have also been encouraging my clients to use .gy domains instead of .com and .org because it would give a clear indication that their products and services are Guyanese oriented and that Guyana as a whole is embracing Internet technology.
Several emails to the administrator and billing department at the UG IT centre have gone unanswered. I have tried contacting them through the new numbers published in the daily papers but no one at these offices seems to know where the IT centre or individuals responsible for the domain registry are.
So I must ask, why haven’t adequate measures been put in place to allow for the smooth operation of the .gy domain? What exactly is this oversight committee overseeing?
Yours faithfully,
