A goldsmith who had in his possession an unlicensed firearm and a quantity of ammunition was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $50,000 yesterday when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Twenty-three-year-old Ramesh Bahadoor pleaded guilty to the offence of possession of an unlicensed .38 revolver and two rounds of .32 ammunition.
The prosecution stated that around 11:45 hours Bahadoor was visited at his home by a friend who gave him the gun and ammunition with the intention of committing a robbery that night. Later that night while Bahadoor was on Sussex Street in his car BKK7130, the police on duty at a checkpoint intercepted him and he was found with the gun in his pants waist while the rounds were in his pockets. He was arrested and charged with the offence.
Bahadoor said that it was the first time that he had ever committed such an offence and blamed it on the slow income from his job as a goldsmith.
