A miserly spell of fast bowling from Seon Daniels (3-16) backed by a workmanlike innings of 40 from Quincy Ovid steered Georgetown Under-17 to their second successive victory over West Demerara Under-17 when action in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB)/ Gizmos and Gadgets/ GT&T sponsored Under-17 Inter–Association competition continued at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.
Asked to take first strike in a game that started two hours late and was reduced to 38 overs due to seepage on the pitch, West Demerara were bowled out for 84 from 30.2 overs as Madha Dhanpaul with an unbeaten 24 (2×4; 1×6) was the lone batsman to reach double figures, to which Georgetown replied with 85-1 from 18.2 overs.
When West Demerara batted, Daniels and his fellow fast bowler Andre Stoll (2-23) rocked their batting to leave them shakily placed on 32-6. Dhanpaul, who was dropped by Ovid off Ricardo Devers (2-19) when on one with West Demerara 50-7, fought fire with fire by hitting Stoll over wide long on for six as the Georgetown team’s bowling became ragged.
During his sojourn at the wicket, he saw 45 runs being added from the last three batsmen, including a face-saving 26 for the last wicket with Tameshwar Arjoon who was the last wicket to fall, bowled by Daniels for four leaving Dhanpaul unbeaten on 24.
Ovid and Kamal Ramkissoon then added 75 runs for the first wicket from 14.4 overs with Ovid hitting Jhadesh Persaud over midwicket for four in the fifth over of the innings that pushed the score to 36 without loss.
The two raised their team’s 50 in the seventh over when Ovid struck Amir Mohamood over midwicket for his second four, but with victory 10 runs away, he was caught by wicket keeper Kerwin Bennett off Dhanpaul (1-14).
But Ramkissoon (19*) and Dayanand Roopnarine (4*) saw their team to victory which came at 15:30hrs when Dhanpaul bowled a wide delivery down the leg side, and as the ball eluded Bennett they scampered through for a single.
The competition will continue today with Georgetown opposing East Bank at Demerara Cricket Club ground, while West Demerara will take on East Coast at Lusignan Community Centre ground from 09:30 hrs, weather permitting.
