Georgetown’s Regal XI defeated their Berbice’s opponents Untouchables XI at the Eve-Leary ground by seven runs in a brilliant display of cricket in the Guyana Softball League (GSL) organized Banks DIH 15 over softball tournament played this past Sunday.
Regal XI’s victory earned them a spot in the upcoming quarterfinal against Den Amstel XI.
On the day in which rain intervened on several occasions during the Regal XI innings after being asked to bat first, they managed to construct a score of 124-7 in their allotted 15 overs.
Led by a terrific display of batting by Mahase Chunilall who made a pugnacious 45 that included two fours and one six, and with support from fellow opener Zulfikar Ali who contributed 26, saw their team posted what turned out to be a winning total against the strong Ancient County team batting line up.
Sanasee Tyrone led the wicket taking for Untouchables with 3-17 and received support from Vidyan DaSilva who took 2-23.
However, when Untouchables began their reply, they found themselves in a comfortable position at 89-4 after 11 overs in reply, and proceeding along confidently behind Vicky Persaud who spanked two fours and five sixes in his 43 but it all changed when he fell to Chunilall.
David Looknauth tried to guide his team home during the decline of the batting but he too fell for 14 in his short sojourn, and eventually the entire Untouchables batting lineup crumbled for 117 in 14.5 overs.
Regal XI’s bowling was spearheaded by the economical Eri Sharma with 3-13, whilst Chunilall returned to claim 3-22 and adding to his batting display during his team’s innings, received the label of a great all-round performance. Mahendra Arjune was also amongst the wickets grabbing 2-22.
On the quarterfinals card Regal XI are slated to face Den Amstel XI, Rangers XI go up against Trophy Stall XI, Rocky XI will challenge La Jalousie Estate XI and Boom Blast XI will meet Country Side XI.
Meanwhile the next country wide tournament which will be sponsored by Memorex Enterprises Limited, begins this Sunday and will see both the winners and runners-up receiving trophies and cash incentives.
The organizers have noted that a number of teams have signed up from the three counties: Essequibo (21), Berbice (15) and Demerara a whopping 42 teams respectively for this tournament.
The competition will be used to select the various inter-county teams which will be played in October. Persons wishing to represent their county teams will have to play in the Guyana Softball League tournament.
