Famed Guyanese performers Ken Corsbie and Keith Waithe were the major features of a truly entertaining performance held at the Theatre Guild on Sunday evening. In front of a packed auditorium, both performers delivered crowd pleasing acts which left the audience wanting more.
Corsbie – with over five decades in the theatre business – entertained the crowd with his storytelling and comic routine which sent those in the audience into peals of laughter. He clearly showed that even at 78, he has lost none of his skill as an entertainer. Further proof of this was his energetic dancing which formed part of his routine.
Later in the evening Keith Waithe displayed why he is such a highly regarded flautist, as he delivered some beautiful solo renditions. Later on, he teamed up with the group called Buxton Fusion to perform some culturally spiced items. Buxton Fusion is a group which comprises Afro-and Indo-Guyanese musicians who play some of the traditional African and Indian musical instruments. Members of the audience were seen jiving and clapping to the combination of sound produced by the congo drums, the maracas, the flute, the dholak and other instruments. One of the high points of their performance was the rendition of the song ‘Buxton Spice’.
The programme also featured a Kathak dance performance by Shana Somaroo. The young woman, who is an American of Guyanese parentage, was another whose performance was well received by the audience.
As the event ended, the packed audience, which included Sir Shridath Ramphal, gave the performers a resounding round of applause, no doubt showing appreciation for what was a very pleasant evening of entertainment from some of Guyana’s finest talents.
