Man found dead in Affiance trench

The body of a 49-year-old man was yesterday morning found in a trench aback of Affiance on the Essequibo Coast.

The partially submerged body of Mohabeer called Manoosh or Multa of 17 Affiance, Essequibo Coast  was discovered by passersby around 09:30 hrs yesterday.

A relative of the dead man told this newspaper that after they were alerted, he went to the trench and saw his brother-in-law face down about 5 ft from the koker in the trench. The man said they could only see the dead man’s head and shoulder. He further told Stabroek News that when the police fished the body out of the water, the nose and mouth were missing as well as a big chunk of flesh from one of the dead man’s shoulders. He also said that bruises were visible on one of the man’s knees and on his stomach and back.

The sister of the dead man told Stabroek News that her brother visited her residence, which is not too far from where he resided, around 20:00 hrs on Sunday and told her he was going to take a bath in the ‘back dam’. She said that some time after 23:00 hrs, the man’s two sons went looking for him saying that he had not returned home.

She said they searched for him at places where he would normally be, but retired to bed some time after 01:00 hrs yesterday, empty handed.

The woman told this newspaper that around 09:30 hrs yesterday, they were alerted and subsequently went to the trench where they saw the back of the head and a piece of the man’s shoulder. She said that they were puzzled as to how the man drowned since he was a good swimmer and was not drunk at the time. However, she did say that her brother was epileptic and from time to time would have attacks.
Mohabeer has left to mourn his wife, two sons and other relatives and friends.

This newspaper understands that police investigations are continuing and a post-mortem examination is to be conducted on the man’s body.
