Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted $100,000 bail to a man accused of stealing a driving shaft from a police vehicle.
Thirty-nine-year-old Harry Bowler was charged with simple larceny.
The prosecution told the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court that between June 1 and August 13, Bowler allegedly stole the item from the bus of police Constable Komal Singh. It is valued $400,000.
However, Singh’s attorney told the court that his client operates a mechanic shop and two police officers visited the shop in order to have a bus checked out. He said on checking the vehicle Bowler told the officers that the bus needed a better driving shaft. The officers then allegedly took the man to police headquarters and instructed him to remove the instrument from another vehicle that was in the compound and install it on the bus. Bowler just did as was instructed, his attorney said. Further, he said the bus that the instrument had been installed on is currently in operation.
Bowler’s lawyer also told the court that his client was released on $25, 000 station bail but was never told to report to the station. The attorney also said that he was not aware of any disciplinary action that was taken against the officers.
The prosecution then assured the court that disciplinary actions had been taken.
Bowler’s attorney then submitted that the incident only occurred two days ago and his client has already been arrested and ordered to court. He then asked the court to grant Bowler bail.
Bowler was ordered to appear at court on October 1.
