A fruit vendor who stole a quantity of construction material and tools belonging to a woman was sentenced to two years imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Forty-four-year-old Ridley Binns of A 76 East La Penitence pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny.
The prosecution stated that between July 15 and 22, Binns stole the construction material and tools.
Deon Heyliger had secured some floorboards, zinc sheets and tools at A 03 East La Penitence and left for work at the Guyana Defence Force headquarters at Camp Ayanganna. When she made a check subsequently for the items she noticed that some were missing. After enquiries and information she received, she confronted Binns about the missing items but he denied being responsible. However, she arrested him and took him to the police station where he was charged.
Binns told the court that he was responsible for taking six floorboards, but he had returned them to Heyliger. The man pleaded with the magistrate to be lenient with him and asked for a 12-month sentence. He was however given two years.
