Operations at an aquaculture farm at Onverwagt, West Berbice may soon restart.
The Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA-ADA) said it was in talks with the National Aquaculture Association of Guyana (NAAG) on the issue.
MMA General Manager Aubrey Charles told Stabroek News that the Ministry of Agriculture once operated the farm more than two decades ago and he expected it to thrive once again. He said the farm was recently rehabilitated and he expected that it would be managed as a joint venture or leased and rented to a private entity. However, Charles said, to date only the NAAG has expressed an interest in the farm. According to Charles, the “MMA is inclined to work out an arrangement with the NAAG…” but has to complete the infrastructure.
Charles said Dr Rafael Fdez de Alaiza who is attached the ministry has been “supervising the rehabilitation of the ponds and providing technical advice.” He also pointed out that the ponds have already been rehabilitated and tubes have been installed to take in and drain fresh water but they have encountered problems draining fresh water from the canals across the road into the ponds. The front section of the canal has already been dug for this purpose, he said.
