A mother of five who allegedly threw pepper sauce on another woman was placed on $15,000 bail when she appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Fifty-year-old Jacklyn Lagnah of 83 Leopold Street pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawfully and maliciously assaulting Andrea Atherly.
It is alleged that on August 30 Lagnah assaulted Atherly in Leopold Street where Lagnah operated a food stall.
Lagnah stated that on the day in question, Atherly was having a heated conversation with another individual when she told her to remove from in front of her stall because her customers were there. Atherly refused to leave and allegedly dealt her a lash on her shoulder.
However, Atherly stated that she never struck Lagnah. She said that the whole situation came about when Lagnah accused her of spreading scandalous tales about her granddaughter. She said that on that day as she was passing Lagnah’s stall, she overheard her telling her daughter about the issue. She approached her and enquired about the alleged scandal that she was accused of spreading. Lagnah did not reply but reportedly took a cup from her stall containing pepper sauce and threw the contents on her. Lagnah then allegedly ran upstairs and got a bottle of pepper sauce and also threatened to throw it on her. The matter was reported to the police station and Lagnah was arrested.
The prosecution did not object to bail. The magistrate transferred the matter to Court Two.
