Two young men who allegedly stole a hose belonging to the Guyana Fire Service and broke and entered another man’s property and stole a quantity of items from him were placed on $100,000 bail each when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Ignatius Mann, 45, of 334 Sachi Bazaar Street, Prashad Nagar and Obrey Archer, 48, of North Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charges of simple larceny and breaking and entering.
It is alleged that on August 27 in Georgetown, Mann and Archer stole a jet hose valued $71,000 from the Guyana Fire Service.
It is also alleged that between August 13 and 25 the two accused broke and entered the home of Gordon Peters and stole cash and two nozzles totaling $210,000 in value.
Their attorney stated that on the day in question Mann who is a merchandiser and works in the interior bought the hose from Archer for $50,000 after Archer had allegedly bought it from someone else. The defence counsel went on to say that Peters who accused Mann and Archer of stealing the hose from him was also arrested for being in possession of it and attempting to sell it at the Fire Station. The attorney then applied for bail for the two accused.
However, the prosecution stated that Mann was arrested in a car where the hose was found and the Fire Service had identified it as its property. The prosecution further stated that Peters never said that the hose was his but that one of the nozzles that was found belonged to him.
Since the prosecution did not object to bail, Magistrate Ogle granted the two accused bail and ordered that they return to court on October 8.
