A Bagotville man who allegedly assaulted a police constable was remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Twenty-one-year-old Corwin Anderson of 108 David Rose Street, Bagotville, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawfully and maliciously assaulting Police Constable Marvin Marano.
It is alleged that on September 2 in Alexander Street, the accused was caught riding his bicycle up the one way and constable Marano who was in the vicinity told him about the offence he got punched in the face by Anderson.
However, Anderson said he was riding from Charlotte Street to Regent Street along what he had thought was a two-way street but was stopped and informed by Marano that it was one-way. He said further that Marano then told him to let the air out from the bicycle tyres but he refused at first stating that he had a long way to go so he needed the bike. He said that after a few exchange of words he complied by flattening the tyres. Anderson said that he then proceeded to go on his way but Marano held on to the bike and while taking his hand off the saddle it accidentally hit Marano on the jaw.
Magistrate Ogle ordered that the accused be remanded to prison and to appear back in Court One on September 29.
